December Reading Wrapped

December Reading Wrapped

After a heavy reading November, I traveled home for the holidays and spent some much needed face-time with my family. This translated to very little down time, but I still managed to squeeze a few books in!

1. This is How You Lose the Time War by Amal El-Mohtar & Max Gladstone

My Rating: 4
Goodreads Rating: 3.87

One of the most unique romance novels I have every read. This is actually a semi-reread of a DNF from 2023. I found the paperback on sale at my local bookstore and felt it a sign to give it another go (also the cover is pretty). To my surprise, I enjoyed it more almost immediately and quickly devoured the entire thing. This short novel provides a sensorial experience that explores the Dionysian flame of a time-bending, forbidden love.

2. The Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides

My Rating: 3.75
Goodreads Rating: 4.18

This well-rounded psychological thriller left you with no loose ends or frustrating ambiguity. I did not predict the twist, however I felt the way it was revealed lacked a certain punch that it had been built up to. The main struggle I had with this book was my complete indifference for either of the main characters. I felt deeply disconnected from them which made caring about their tribulations difficult. I also think my perception is skewed by how heavily influencers promoted this book which set the initial bar very high. I would like to give another book by this author a try before I make any definitive conclusions.
